Why is My Scalp So Dry in Winter?

Why is My Scalp So Dry in Winter?

Winter is just about here, the weather is turning much colder already in many parts of the country.  This time of year with lowered temperatures brings about an issue that I hear about a lot in the salon, dry scalp.

A dry scalp is a common problem during the winter. Scalp dryness in the winter can be caused by several factors, including lower humidity, colder temperatures, and windy weather. Winter weather, even in "warmer" areas, and dry air can suck the moisture out of your scalp, leading to dryness, itchiness, and even hair loss. Find out what causes winter dry scalp and see how you can treat it by using the tips below to combat dry scalp before it even starts.

Mind the Winter Weather

The winter weather can take a toll on your skin, especially your scalp. Dry, cold air can zap moisture from your scalp, making it feel tight, dry, and itchy. And if you have dandruff or other scalp conditions, the chill can make them worse. you'll want to include a scalp oil with ingredients like zinc and peppermint to keep scalp dryness and itch at bay

Be Careful of Indoor Heating

Indoor heating can make a dry scalp even worse. In the winter, we tend to use indoor heating a lot more, and that dry heat affects your scalp.  If you already have a dry scalp, try to avoid turning up the indoor heat as much as possible. Also, keep if you use a blow dryer, try to use the minimum heat you'll need or avoid the heat altogether if you can.

A humidifier in your home can also help to add moisture to the air and help keep your scalp hydrated.

Use the Right Shampoo/Conditioner

Using the wrong shampoo or conditioner can also cause scalp dryness. If you have a dry scalp, it's important to use products that are specifically designed to moisturize and hydrate your hair and scalp. Look for shampoos and conditioners that are "moisturizing" or "hydrating."

Avoid products with harsh chemicals, parabens, or sulfates, as these can further strip moisture from your scalp.

Invest in a Haircare System

Use a complete haircare system to treat winter scalp and hair dryness.  Our Moisture Growth System is a complete system that contains everything you need to help with a dry winter scalp and is designed to treat your hair from scalp to ends! The Moisture Growth System contains a hydrating shampoo, moisturizing conditioner, heat protectant with sunscreen, leave-in treatment, and healthy hair oil to stem wintertime shedding too.

A dry scalp is a common winter problem, but there are several things you can do to combat the problem either before it starts or after. Be mindful of the winter weather and try to avoid exposure to dry, cold air as much as possible. Avoid using high indoor heat, and try to avoid using hair dryers on high heat.  Use a humidifier in your home to add moisture to the air, and use products specifically designed for a dry scalp.
